How To Choose Your Bridal Hair Accessories Online (And Get It Right First Time!)

I had a lot of questions when it came to hair accessories when I got married 8 years ago. Things like, “How do you wear a hair vine?” And “What would work in my short hair?”

I came to the conclusion (wrongly!) that, as all the pictures I saw of hair vines on Pinterest were styled in long hair, that I couldn’t wear them in my short bob.

This of course was completely ridiculous as hair vines are pretty much the most versatile accessory out there, but it shows how the images we see become a reflection of what we think we can, and can’t, have.

With few opportunities to try things on in bridal shops at the moment (thanks social distancing!), I thought I’d share some tips for buying your accessories online and how to get it right first time.

Hi! I’m Sarah…

…an accessory designer with a love of sentimental details. Intuition is my super power and I can transform your ideas in to reality!

Tip 1: Shop for your hair type or length

In a digital world of infinite options, one of the best ways to find a bridal headpiece that’s perfect for you is to narrow down your search.

Instead of searching for vague terms like “bridal hair accessories”, be more specific by adding in a phrase like, “for short hair/curly hair/fine hair”. This will start to narrow down options for you and show what will work best for you.

Bonus tip: Add in your hair colour too as this will give you a better picture of how different metal colours work with your hair!

Tip 2: Shop based on your chosen bridal hair style

Narrowing your search down by specifying your chosen hair style might also help, for example “bridal accessories for up dos” or better yet, “bridal accessories for buns/plaits/ponytails” will give you inspiration that fits in with you bridal hair vision.

It’s also worth getting some advice from your hair stylist at your hair trial or initial booking to see what they recommend, as they will take in to consideration your chosen style and will have a good idea of what will work best.

I’ve designed my website to work for you in this way: click here to find advice for different hair types, lengths, and styles, along with suggestions of things to avoid or how to get more from your chosen accessory.

Tip 3: Be mindful of what you do with your hair on a daily basis

Hair fiddler? Never wear accessories? You want to feel like the best version of yourself on your wedding day, so overwhelming yourself with huge, show-stopping accessories may not be the best way forward if you’re not used to wearing anything normally.

Also, if you tend to fiddle with your hair, is a set of loose pins going to feel comfortable for you? I’m guessing not, as you would be constantly checking to see if they were still there.

Being mindful of your hair habits helps you to make a logical decision about what will work best for you, or help you to plan better.

Hair fiddlers may feel more comfortable wearing something more secure in their hair, like a headband or tiara, while those who don’t tent to wear accessories in their hair may feel more comfortable wearing something lightweight, that doesn’t put too much pressure on their head or feel heavy in their hair.

Tip 4: Buy the best that you can afford - you won’t regret it

But you will if you set your budget too low! When you’ve put all that attention to detail in your wedding day, don’t fall short on the finishing touches.

A beautiful accessory doesn’t need to cost a fortune, but knowing that it’s something you’ve invested in and fallen in love with makes a huge difference. You hold your head higher, walk taller and feel more confident with all eyes on you, as every piece of the puzzle fits together.

Tip 5: Get advice from designers

Most bridal accessory designers that you meet at wedding exhibitions or follow online will be more than happy to give you some suggestions about what will work for you. This gives you a solid foundation for making your decision, gives you a clearer focus and helps you to feel more confident when shopping online.

It’s an experience that I want every bride to have…from choosing the elements of the design, to incorporating sentimental details and your colour scheme to having complete trust that the designer you choose will make sure that your finished accessory will fit you perfectly.
