Where To Find Inspiration For Your Bridal Accessories

When I ask brides for their thoughts on bespoke hair accessories, there are two things that always come up:

  1. The price (read my thoughts here!), and

  2. Where to start with ideas.

Some brides have a very clear idea of what they want when they come to me but most actually start with no idea at all.

And that’s ok! Because designing a bespoke piece is a process that we work through together, so if you’re worried that you don’t know what you want, we’ll discover things you love together.

Here are a few places to start though. Let me know your favourite below!

Hi, I’m Sarah…

…an accessory designer with a love of sentimental details who celebrates style over trends. Intuitively designed, each accessory tells the love story of the person who inspired it.

Spend a while on my blog for inspiration, advice and tips for choosing your perfect bridal accessories!

Your dress

Your dress can inspire so many details for your hair accessories. This could be the details on the dress, like the colour of the beading or a sparkly detail on the waist, or the style of the dress, for example a simple dress may inspire a more minimalist headpiece.

The lace details on dresses can also be brought through to your accessories. I can create a pattern with beads that compliments the pattern of the lace on your dress, tying the two in together beautifully!

Your engagement ring

This is one of my favourites, usually as it means a bit of colour! Your headpiece could be created in the metal colours of your engagement ring or, if you have a coloured stone, with crystals of the same colour.

My bride Ros chose a rich emerald green for her headpiece with silver wire to match her engagement ring, whilst Gabrielle chose rose gold wire, soft pinks and amethyst for her vine to compliment her vintage rose gold and amethyst ring.

Nikki, on the other hand, had a tri-coloured engagement ring, so we incorporated silver, gold and rose gold in to her headpiece, along with colours from her flowers. Scroll down to see a picture!

Your flowers

Flowers are a great way of customising your headpiece. You could incorporate the colours and shapes of your flowers in to your headpiece.

Helena and Tom had forget-me-nots at their wedding in memory of Helena’s late grandpa. When it came to designing her headpiece, we decided to continue the theme, creating little blue flowers with tiny yellow centres so that she had a reminder of grandad in every aspect of her wedding.

(It’s the stories like this that get me every time!)

Sentimental details

Just like Helena, you could add sentimental details to your hair accessories by repurposing a brooch from mum or nan, or using parts of their own bridal headpiece (with permission, of course!).

This is a great way of celebrating your loved ones and adds a really special touch to your accessories.

I always say that these little details have more weight to them; they really feel like they hold a story and it’s such an honour to work with treasured items to create something new.

Cara’s mum had very kindly given Cara a string of pearls that she wore to her own wedding, which Cara decided to add in to her headpiece. I also managed to make both mum and daughter a pair of matching earrings from the pearls and a necklace for Cara, so each piece was part of the bigger picture.

(Unfortunately as Cara’s wedding has been postponed, you’ll have to wait a while to see this one!)

Things you love or your wedding theme

My final suggestion for personalising your bridal hair accessories is to add your personality in!

Nikki did this and wasn’t disappointed with the results! As she and Joey were due to get married at the zoo, with bouquets of colourful flowers to suit Nikki’s love of colour, we designed a headpiece to incorporate all these elements.

Nikki’s mum had given her a large flamingo brooch (Nikki’s favourite animal) and I sat this at the centre of her headpiece, surrounded by vines of silver, gold and rose gold finished with crystals in colours of tropical flowers and a range of greens. There couldn’t have been a more perfect piece for her!
