Do Bespoke Accessories Cost A Lot More Than Ready-Made Ones?

In case you were wondering, here’s the answer!

In a nutshell, it very much depends.

Some things off the shelf that are mass produced will cost less, as you’d expect, but the truth is that most accessory designers who create ready-made pieces may not charge much more for a bespoke piece.

Yes, you read that right!

Years ago, when my friend got married, she wore a beautiful wedding dress that fitted and flattered her perfectly. I asked her where she got it and she told me someone had made it for her.

My first thought was, “Wow, that must have cost a fortune!” But actually, my friend had paid much less than I would have thought for it.

She hadn’t had to pay out extra to have it fitted and she chose the material she liked and the design based on what she felt comfortable with and what worked for her budget.

It sounded like a win win!

I’d never thought about the hidden extras when you buy something off the peg - alterations and extra appointments.

When I started making hair accessories, I made what I thought people wanted.

But the custom requests were what set my soul on fire and got me working in my element. The creative challenge and knowing the person I was working for made everything so much more personal and special.

And, as I’m sure is the same for many designers, I don’t stock several of the same accessory, so I’m usually making things to order.

The truth is, you could look at any of the accessories in my online shop for a guide price to get an idea of what your dream accessory might cost. I don’t charge more because you’re having something made for you; I charge a fair price for the time it takes me to create the details you like, so getting an idea for the different price points will build a better picture of what you’re likely to invest in your hair accessory.

You may even find that it costs less than you think, but getting an idea of a designer’s work will definitely stand you in good stead to set a reasonable budget.

Like a wedding dress, a bespoke accessory is designed to work with your hair type and style. That might mean looking at the best type of accessory for your hair type so it feels comfortable to wear all day, choosing larger details so it stands out in your thicker hair or coordinating it with your dress, your flowers or your wedding theme.

For my part at least, I don’t think you’d end up spending any more on a bespoke accessory than you would on one ready to purchase in my shop, so why not have something personalised and a little bit special?
